The making starts with cutting the different pieces of the leather upper by a skilled artisan.
Next there is the process called scyving, which is cutting the leather to make it ready to be sewn. The leather needs to be slimmed down due to its natural thickness to allow for stitching.
The different leather parts making up the shoe upper are stitched together.
LEATHER UPPER IS DONE
The leather upper is finished and ready to be attached to the shoe last, the mould that gives the shoe its shape.
The leather upper is glued for preparation to be folded onto the shape of the last.
The shoe upper is folded onto the last, giving the shoe its shape.
The shoe upper, attached to the last, is finished to remove uneven surfaces before attaching the sole.
ATTACHING THE SOLE
The sole is attached by being hand-stitched to the shoe upper.
The shoes are polished with a cream to give it a final shine.
The laces are inserted and the shoes are ready for inspection.
The shoes are ready to go after being inspected by our staff for quality.
We are proud to work with one of the most progressive tanneries and shoe manufacturers in Ethiopia, Hafde Tannery. Located outside of Addis Ababa, Hafde is a family run tannery with 20 years of experience and is run by Hussein Feyysa and his siblings. They started their shoe manufacturing unit in 2014. Hafde have developed a proprietary direct-Chrome treatment plant to reuse processed water from the at times chemical-intense process of tanning leathers. Hafde strongly believes in a mission to commit to high labour and environmental standards while not compromising quality. http://hafde.com
WORKERS' PREMIUM FUND
Together with Hafde, Fair Frank developed and set up the worker’s development premium fund to the benefit of the workers at the factory. Every shoe sold contributes 5€ directly to this fund. A portion of the fund is equally distributed as a cash bonus on top of the workers' regular salaries while a minor portion is reserved for supporting projects in the communities they live. The aim of this fund is to improve the livelihoods of the workers and their families, and the communities in which they live.
Everything starts of course with designing the product where we collaborate with Lauro Designer in Torre San Patrizio in Eastern Italy, bringing +20 years of shoe-making and design into the process.
A crucial part of developing our shoes is choosing the right last. Our lasts are developed together with our design partner Lauro Designer to make sure best fit and quality and are imported from Italy.
