Sneaker Care Guide

As with everything in life you need to show your FAIR FRANKs some extra love for them to continue being awesome. We have prepared a guide for you to clean and protect your shoes. For best results and durability we recommend you to do step 4 below before you wear your shoes for the first time to protect them.

About Vegetable Tanned Leather

First, let us tell you a note about vegetable-tanned leather used to make our shoes. Vegetable tanning uses only natural natural materials in the dyeing process, such as tree bark, as opposed to chemicals and minerals in conventional chrome-tanned leather, and therefore will show a natural brownish color by nature. Due to this process the leather will become darker over time and develop a darker patina as you wear them. This natural darkening process happens as your vegetable-tanned leather shoes ages.

Please keep in mind:

Each pair is handmade and the leather used can present unique characteristics and therefore vary between pairs.

Conditioning the leather using the steps below usually darkens the leather slightly and enhances the natural darkening process, which is normal.

Some shoe care products may darken or discolor the leather.

We recommend you to complete the full steps below once a year to restore your leather shoes to its natural beauty. Every 3-4 months you can also treat your shoes with the conditioner step below which will further speed up the natural darkening process of the leather that happens during ageing.

Step 1:

Clean your shoes from dirt and debris using a fine cloth. We recommend you use a microfiber cloth you can purchase here, which is soft on the shoes and do not leave any residue material on your shoes. You can also use a soft horsehair brush.

Step 2:

Before conditioning first make sure the leather is clean, this helps to ensure better penetration of the nourishing oils into the leather. Then wipe the leather with a light coat of conditioner using a clean cloth. We recommend using the Saphir Renovateur which has a good mix of natural oils needed to nurture the vegetable tanned leather of your shoes. If you want a natural conditioner you can also use olive oil. Leave the conditioner to soak in for a few hours or overnight. Afterwards use a clean cloth to dry and remove any conditioner that is left.

Step 3:

To make your shoes shine like new you need a shoe cream and we recommend you use a clean cotton cloth to apply Saphir Pate de Luxe in a matching color of your shoes (please refer to the bottom of this page for color and wax matching reference). If you can’t get a hold on the Pate de Lux we can also recommend the Saphir Pate de Luxe Beaute du Cuir Wax in the same matching color, which is a beewax based cream helping the leather’s water resistance. Let the wax sink into the leather for a few minutes and afterwards, use a clean cotton cloth to shine the shoes.

Voila!

Your Fair Franks are restored to its natural beauty. Now, time to go out and enjoy them again, where will your shoes take you now?

As an extra step before Step 1 above you could clean your FAIR FRANKs using Saphir Lotion, ensuring it is clean before you condition the leather with oils. However, we recommend not to use too much cleaning agents as it will speed up the natural darkening process of the leather.
